It can be easily misidentified as Streptococci or staphylococci. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola: Susceptibility Testing of 120 Isolates to Six Antimicrobial Agents Using Disk Diffusion (EUCAST), Etest, and Broth Microdilution Techniques Aerococcus urinae is an uncommon urinary tract pathogen that causes infections predominantly in elderly persons with local or general predisposing conditions. During a one-year study, the clinical features ofAerococcus urinae urinary tract infections (≥105 cfu/ml) were investigated in two large medical microbiology laboratories in the Netherlands. One of the rare bacterial species recently associated with biofilms and negative cultures in infective endocarditis is Aerococcus urinae. Whether the low number of reported cases might be due to lack of awareness and misidentification, mainly as streptococci, is currently being discussed.
Aerococcus urinae is a Gram-positive alpha-hemolytic bacterium first isolated and identified from urine from patients with UTI (8). Since its discovery, A. urinae has been isolated from a wide variety of patients, both male and female, ranging from children to the elderly (9).

Embolization is frequently reported with Aerococcus urinae endocarditis (AUE); hence, the presentation is highly variable. Aerococcus urinae is increasingly recognized as a potentially significant urinary tract bacterium. A. urinae has been isolated from urine collected from both males and females with a wide range of clinical conditions, including urinary tract infection (UTI), urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), and overactive bladder (OAB). A. urinae is of particular clinical concern because it is highly Aerococcus urinae can, in older males with underlying urinary tract conditions, cause invasive infections such as urosepsis or infective endocarditis. The prognosis of invasive aerococcal infections appears to be relatively favourable despite the old age of patients and their many comorbidities.

To evaluate procedures for the identification of Aerococcus urinae, we examined 24 α‐hemolytic non‐enterococcal bacterial isolates from 4373 urine samples.Published procedures were compared with 16s rRNA sequencing and biochemical profiling (BBL‐Crystal‐GP). 16s rRNA sequencing and BBL‐Crystal‐GP identified the same 13 isolates as A. urinae.

Aerococcus urinae is an infrequently reported Gram-positive coccus mostly associated with urinary tract infection in elderly females. Sporadically, the organism has been described as the cause of severe infections. 1 We report a young boy who had malodorous urine as the only sign of colonization with A .
All patients had underlying urologic conditions. Urine cultures, however, were negative. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are newcomers to clinical and microbiological practice. The first report on A. urinae was published in 1989 (14) and the name designated in 1992 ( 1 ) and A. sanguinicola was named in 2001 ( 40 ). Notably, several other types of infection due to A. urinae, as well as other Aerococcus species, have been described, including peritonitis, osteomyelitis, dental, joint, and soft-tissue infections [6,19-26].
